30 Day Blog Challenge – #4 My Views on Religion

Oh wow…now it’s religion…ouch.

I often refer to myself as a non-practicing Catholic. I believe in God and Jesus, but I honestly think organized religion can be a scary, dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Religion is meant to keep us spiritually healthy, and it’s not meant to be yet another reason for people to go out and harm or kill others. The problem seems to be that there’s always some nutjob who finds a way to twist the words of whatever religion he’s claiming to be an expert in, then uses it to take advantage of people who feel lost and insignificant enough to listen to him, then they start a “holy war”.

I find it really interesting that if you break each religion down into it’s most basic parts, the stories and rules are all pretty much the same. The Noah’s Ark of the Bible is very similar to stories in all the other religions. Maybe if more people understood this, they would realize that although the details of all the religions are different, they are also very similar on many levels.

I guess I really feel it’s a shame that we can’t all just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

I had a friend years ago that called herself a “recovering Catholic.” That always made me giggle!

  2. I agree with you completely. Any kind of zealot frightens me. Some people use serving God as an opportunity to do harm to others.
